Strongside step 1
Step 1CHIN - STRONGSIDE ENTRY STRONGSIDE is a part of the CHIN offense and is keyed with a pass to the strongside wing instead of a pass to the guard across the top of the key. The post fills the strongside elbow.
Strongside step 2
Step 2After the pass to the 3, the 1 will UCLA cut off the 5 to the rim for the return pass and layup. After setting this screen, the 5 will step out high above the elbow extended behind the 3 point line. The 3 passes the ball to the 5.
Strongside step 3
Step 3PLAY 6 VS. 5 ON OFFENSE This is the only case that I know of where the offense is able to play 6 vs. 5 vs. the defense. HOW? There is a 3 man play going on the strongside with the 3 setting a down screen for the 1. However, the 5 is also involved in a 3 man game with the 4 setting a flare screen for the 2. The 5 is involved in both 3 on 3 games thus making this a 6 vs. 5 play.
Strongside step 4
Step 4KEY READ: FLARE CUT A common read for the original Princeton team as well as the Air Force team is where the defense on the 2 which is the X2 plays over the top of the flare screen. The area under the rim is clear for 2 to finish the cut to the rim for the pass and layup.
Strongside step 5
Step 5AIR FORCE VERSION: POST CHANGE The Air Force version of this offense differs from the high school version in one way: the Air Force changes its post player whereas the high school version keeps the same post player. Basically, the high school version has only two spots to learn: perimeter & posy. Players can learn one of two positions. The Air Force version insists that all players learn the post and perimeter positions. Players must have a high basketball IQ to accomplish this effectively. The ball is passed to the post (3) and the 5 fakes a screen for the 4. The 4 backcuts for a pass from 3 and fills the corner. 5 fills the top of the key and we have our low options from here. AIR FORCE VERSION: POST CHANGE
Strongside step 6
Step 6HIGH SCHOOL VERSION 1 In this version, we need to get the post back in position, so the 3 after setting down screen for the 1, sets a back screen for the 5. The 5 UCLA cuts off the 3 to the hoops for the pass from 1 and a layup.
Strongside step 7
Step 7HIGH SCHOOL VERSION 2 In this version, we pass to the 5 who fills the top for the ball. The 4 has already set the flare screen for the 2 and popped back to the wing. The 2 has filled the corner position. From this point, we have a 5 OUT alignment and run that phase in this version.
