True shooting percentage (TS%) measures scoring efficiency in one number by counting twos, threes and free throws together. This page gives you a true shooting calculator, an eFG% calculator, and short definitions, so you can enter the numbers from any box score.

This calculator uses the 0.44 free throw factor from Basketball-Reference's NBA formula. Sports Reference's college glossary uses 0.475, so a college number can differ slightly.

What Is True Shooting Percentage?

Formula: TS% = 100 × PTS ÷ (2 × (FGA + 0.44 × FTA)).

The 0.44 multiplier estimates how many possessions end with free throw trips, so attempts at the line count toward efficiency without treating every foul as a full possession. Sports Reference's college formula uses 0.475 in place of 0.44.

Coaches use TS% to compare guards who shoot mostly threes, wings who mix midrange and drives, and posts who live at the line. Field goal percentage alone leaves out free throws.

Questions Coaches Ask About TS%

What is a good true shooting percentage?

The NBA average was 58.1 percent in 2025-26, per Basketball-Reference. For a school team, compare a player to his teammates and his role.

What is a good eFG%?

The NBA average was 54.6 percent in 2025-26, per the same table.

Why 0.44 for free throws?

It estimates how many possessions end at the free throw line, so free throws count without treating every trip as a full field goal attempt. Sports Reference uses 0.475 for college.

Can I use this for team totals?

Yes. Add team points, field goal attempts and free throw attempts from the box score and run the same calculator.

How is eFG% different from TS%?

eFG% adjusts field goals for three-point value only. TS% also credits free throw scoring in one efficiency number.
