How long is a basketball game? On the game clock, a standard high school game under NFHS rules is four 8-minute quarters, NCAA men's varsity play is two 20-minute halves, NCAA women and FIBA use four 10-minute quarters, and the NBA plays four 12-minute periods. If the score is tied at the end of regulation, every level listed here goes to overtime with a shorter extra period. Halftime and the breaks between quarters are not playing time; those lengths are on how long basketball halftime is.

The table counts only the running game clock in live play. Timeouts, fouls, out-of-bounds reviews and the halftime interval add real-world minutes that the rulebook does not cap. How Many Quarters in a Basketball Game?
Not every level uses quarters. Four quarters is the shape for NFHS high school (four 8-minute quarters), NCAA women (four 10-minute quarters), FIBA (four 10-minute quarters) and the NBA (four 12-minute periods, still called quarters on TV). Two halves is the shape for NCAA men only (two 20-minute halves). Youth leagues may use four shorter quarters or two halves; ask the director before you schedule.
Halftime splits the game whether you play quarters or halves. In a four-quarter game, the first half is quarters one and two and the second half is quarters three and four. Team fouls in the bonus often reset by quarter or half depending on the book; see what bonus means in basketball. Break lengths between quarters are listed on how long basketball halftime is.
NBA Game Length
The NBA book sets twelve-minute periods and five-minute overtime periods (Rule 5 Sec. II(a) and (b)). Halftime is fifteen minutes (Rule 5 Sec. II(c)). There is no running clock in NBA rules except the game and shot clocks.
How Long Is a College Basketball Game?
NCAA men. Varsity games are two twenty-minute halves with a fifteen-minute halftime (Rule 5 Sec. 6 Art. 1). On the clock that is 40 minutes of regulation before stoppages. Extra periods are five minutes (Rule 5 Sec. 9 Art. 3). Non-varsity games may use shorter halves by conference agreement (Rule 5 Sec. 6 Art. 2).
NCAA women. Varsity games are four ten-minute quarters with fifteen-minute halftime (Rule 5 Sec. 6 Art. 1). On the clock that is also 40 minutes of regulation. Overtime is five minutes. The women's structure matches FIBA quarter length even though NCAA men still play halves.
College games often run longer in real time than the clock because of timeouts, media breaks in televised games and foul shots. The shot clock keeps possessions moving; see basketball shot clock rules.

How Long Is a High School Basketball Game?
Under the NCAA-published comparison chart for 2025-26, NFHS regulation is four eight-minute quarters, so 32 minutes on the running clock before overtime. Real games usually last longer because of timeouts, fouls and halftime. Overtime is four minutes per the same comparison chart. The current NFHS rulebook is sold rather than posted free, so confirm wording with your state association. The 2017-18 NFHS book also listed six-minute quarters for games with only players below ninth grade (Rule 5-5-2); middle school detail is on middle school basketball rules.
Youth and Middle School
There is no single national youth rulebook. Rec leagues and school districts publish their own game length, often shorter quarters and a running clock in blowouts. Before you plan a practice or a tournament schedule, ask the league director for the period length, clock rules and overtime format in writing. Coaching guides for young teams are on coaching youth basketball and youth basketball dribbling drills.
Overtime
When regulation ends tied, play continues in overtime until one team leads at the end of an extra period. NFHS overtime is four minutes per the rules-differences chart; NCAA, NBA and FIBA use five-minute extra periods in the sources listed in the table. Team fouls and timeouts in overtime follow each book's overtime article (see basketball overtime rules and basketball timeout rules).
What Adds Time Around the Clock
Coaches should separate clock minutes from calendar minutes. Timeouts, free throws, out-of-bounds stoppages and media breaks extend the real length of a game without changing the rulebook's period length. Shot-clock length by level is on basketball shot clock rules. A pre-game routine that respects warm-up time and scorer's-table checks is on game day routine for basketball coaches.
