What does bonus mean in basketball? Bonus is the colloquial name for the team-foul penalty: once a team commits enough fouls in a period or half, the opponent shoots free throws on common personal fouls instead of only getting the ball out of bounds. "Double bonus" usually means two free throws with no one-and-one, though the exact count differs by level. The scorer's table often lights "bonus" when the limit is reached.
Bonus and Double Bonus by Level
| Level | Foul count resets | Bonus starts (common fouls) | Double bonus (two shots, no one-and-one) | Rule source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NFHS | Each quarter | 5th team foul in the quarter: two shots | Same as bonus (no one-and-one since 2023-24) | NCAA/NFHS DIFF; NFHS 2023-24 rules change summary |
| NCAA men | Each half | 7th team foul: one-and-one | 10th team foul in the half: two shots | NCAA men Rule 10 Sec. 1 Penalty c and d.3 |
| NCAA women | Each quarter | 5th team foul in the quarter: two shots | Same as bonus (no one-and-one) | NCAA women Rule 10 Sec. 10 Penalty c.1 |
| NBA | Each period | 5th team foul: one free throw plus a penalty free throw (two total) | Same penalty structure each time over the limit | NBA Rule 12B Sec. V |
| FIBA | Each quarter | 5th team foul in the quarter: two shots | Same as bonus | FIBA Art. 42.1.1 and 42.2 |
Overtime fouls carry their own limits in some books. NBA overtime uses three team fouls before the penalty (Rule 12B Sec. V(a)(2)). Full foul types and penalties are on basketball fouls list, and free-throw procedure is on basketball free throw rules.
What Counts as a Team Foul
Team fouls are personal fouls charged to the team total for the period or half. Technical fouls may also count depending on the book. Offensive fouls do not always count toward the bonus: the NBA does not charge a team foul on an offensive foul (Rule 12B Sec. VII(a)), while NCAA women and FIBA count most personal fouls. The comparison table on basketball fouls list lists each level.
High School Bonus
Since the 2023-24 NFHS change, high school basketball uses the fifth team foul in each quarter to award two free throws, with no one-and-one. Team fouls reset at the end of each quarter. Confirm the current wording in your state association rulebook because the full NFHS text is not posted free online.
College Bonus
NCAA men still use the classic one-and-one at the seventh team foul in a half and two shots from the tenth. That is why TV announcers say "double bonus" at ten in men's college games.
NCAA women align with NFHS-style quarter fouls: two shots from the fifth team foul in the quarter. Women's team fouls reset each quarter.
NBA and FIBA Bonus
NBA. Each team is allowed four team fouls per regulation period without penalty. The fifth and each later common foul in that period yields one free throw plus a penalty free throw unless the foul is on a shooter (Rule 12B Sec. V). In the last two minutes, a team that has not reached four fouls may commit one foul without penalty if it had not yet reached its quota (same section).
FIBA. A team is in the penalty after four team fouls in a quarter; later non-shooting fouls bring two free throws (Art. 42). FIBA counts more foul types toward the team total than the NBA does; see Art. 42.1.1 in the current FIBA book.
What Bonus Changes for Coaches
In the bonus, fouling to stop the clock costs free throws. Late-game strategy on when to foul is on fouling when trailing and basketball clock management. In full-court pressure before the bonus, a smart foul may still be a plain throw-in; after the bonus, the same foul sends someone to the line.
Track the foul count on your bench card each quarter or half. The scorer's table is official, but assistants should know when you are one foul from sending the other team to the line. Timeout planning with bonus in mind is on basketball timeout management. Game length and when quarters reset fouls are on how long a basketball game is, and foul vocabulary is in the stats and rules sections of basketball terms.
Questions Coaches Ask
What does bonus mean on the scoreboard?
It means at least one team has reached the foul limit for the current period or half, so common fouls will produce free throws under that rulebook.
What is double bonus in high school?
In modern NFHS rules there is no separate one-and-one; the fifth team foul in the quarter already gives two shots. Announcers may still say "bonus" for any penalty free throws.
When does bonus start in NCAA men's basketball?
One-and-one on the seventh team foul in the half and two shots from the tenth (NCAA men Rule 10 Sec. 1 Penalty).
How many fouls before bonus in the NBA?
Penalty begins with the fifth team foul in a regulation period (NBA Rule 12B Sec. V), with three fouls allowed in each overtime period before the penalty.
Do offensive fouls count toward the bonus?
In the NBA, no. In NCAA women's play and FIBA, personal fouls including many offensive fouls count toward the team total. See the fouls list page for each level.
