UConn basketball plays in this collection are fifteen half-court sets from UConn's 2023 playbook, and this guide draws every frame of every one with where all five players go.

UConn basketball plays in this collection come from UConn's 2023 playbook, a library of well over a hundred named sets. This page picks the clearest families: the Delay series, three Horns ball screen sets, Spain pick and roll, a five-out dribble continuity and two sets against a 2-3 zone. Most of them put a second action right on top of the first, so a ball screen comes with a back screen, a hand-off runs straight into a ball screen, or a flare screen turns into a slip. This page draws 15 sets across 45 frames. Every frame of the original is redrawn, and the text under it names where all five players go.

The screen is rarely the end of the action. The screener slips, pops, rolls or gets screened himself, so the defense has to guard two things at once.

UConn Basketball Plays at a Glance

Six sets share the Delay start with a big out at the top of the key, three start from Horns with two bigs above the elbows, two are built on Spain action, two run the five-out Strong dribble continuity, and two attack a 2-3 zone. Delay Backdoor and Slice Stagger Spain are marked in the source as after-timeout sets. The source names the sets but has no written notes, so every read on this page comes from the diagrams.

How to Read These Diagrams

Every play is drawn frame by frame, one diagram for each frame of the original, and the text under each diagram says where every player starts and where he goes. The basket is at the bottom of each diagram. Sides are named as a player sees them facing the basket, so the left wing is on the right side of the picture. A solid arrow is a cut, a dashed arrow is a pass, a wavy line is a dribble and a line ending in a short bar is a screen. The diagram guide covers the symbols in full. No offensive player starts a frame standing in the lane. Where a source frame had someone there, he is drawn on the nearest lane line or block.

Ideas That Repeat

  • The Delay sets all begin with the ball going to the top of the key, then the passer screens or gets screened right away.
  • A flare screen is often a decoy. In Delay Flare the screener slips to the rim, and in Horns Ghost Flare the cutter fakes a ball screen first.
  • Dribble hand-offs lead straight into ball screens in Horns Miami and Strong Dribble Continuity.
  • Spain action puts a back screen on the roller's defender, so the help defender gets screened while he is helping.
  • The five-out continuity keeps every corner filled, so each stagger and ball screen has open driving lanes.
  • Against the zone, the cutters go behind the back line and the screens are set on defenders, not on the ball.

The actions are covered in more depth in Spain pick and roll, pick and roll, flare screen basketball, dribble hand-off, stagger screens from the corner and Horns sets. The backdoor read ties into backdoor triggers, the five-out spacing into five-out motion, and the zone sets into attacking a 2-3 zone and zone quick hitters. For timeouts, see after timeout plays and how to run quick hitters. UConn is one of the programs on the college basketball plays page under the Offense hub. Questions Coaches Ask About UConn Basketball Plays

Which UConn sets are on this page?

Fifteen sets: Delay, Delay 2 Man, Delay Backdoor, Delay Flare, Delay Flare DHO, Delay Pin, Horns Ghost Flare, Horns Gut Elbow, Horns Miami, Spain, Slice Stagger Spain, Strong Dribble Continuity, Strong Dribble Back, Zone Angle Flash and Zone Lob.

What is the Delay set?

A big starts just above the free-throw line and steps out to the top of the key for the first pass (5 in most of the Delay sets, 4 in Delay 2 Man). The guards and wings then screen for each other off that pass, with a flare, a pin-down, a hand-off or a backdoor cut as the next action.

What is Spain pick and roll?

A ball screen at the top of the key with a third player at the free-throw line. As the screener rolls, that player sets a back screen on the roller's defender and then pops out for a pass.

What does Ghost mean in Horns Ghost Flare?

The player at the elbow runs at the ball handler as if to set a ball screen, then leaves before he sets it and fades off a flare screen to the wing.

What is the Strong Dribble Continuity?

A five-out pattern: a stagger screen, a ball screen and a dribble back to the other side, a second stagger, then a hand-off into a ball screen and roll. The floor is spread again at the end, so it can run again.
