Wichita State basketball plays on this page come in four groups. The first is Shocker, a quick hitter from a low double stack that former Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall used: a UCLA cut, a feed to the elbow, a shuffle cut and a staggered double down screen in one possession. The second is 57 WU, a man-to-man set from a stack with an elbow entry and three options in order. The third is a baseline out-of-bounds series that the Wichita State playbook files under the Boston Celtics name, and the fourth is a zone motion against a 1-3-1 zone or a 1-3-1 trap. This page draws 6 plays across 20 frames, and the text under each frame names where all five players are and where each one goes.
Wichita State Basketball Plays at a Glance
The first row is Shocker in six frames, including the back cut when the wing is denied. The next row is 57 WU, with an elbow entry and a dribble hand-back. Then come the three inbounds plays, Fist Middle, Fist Back and Fire, and last the five frames of the 1-3-1 zone motion. Sets drawn while scouting other teams, and sets with no mark tying them to Wichita State, are left off. For the cut that opens Shocker, see UCLA offense basketball.

How to Read These Diagrams
Every play is drawn frame by frame, one diagram for each frame of the original, and the text under each diagram says where every player starts and where he goes. The basket is at the bottom of each diagram. Sides are named as a player sees them facing the basket, so the left wing is on the right side of the picture. A solid arrow is a cut, a dashed arrow is a pass, a wavy line is a dribble and a line ending in a short bar is a screen. The diagram guide covers the symbols in full. No offensive player starts a frame standing in the lane. Where a source frame had someone there, he is drawn on the nearest lane line or block.

Shocker: Gregg Marshall's Double Stack Quick Hitter
Shocker
From a low double stack: a UCLA cut for 1, a post feed to 5 at the elbow, a shuffle cut for 3, then a staggered double down screen that brings 1 to the free-throw line.
Frame 1. Low double stack: 3 is on the left block with 5 stacked just above him, and 2 is on the right block with 4 stacked just above him. 1 brings the ball up and dribbles into the left slot. 3 cuts out from the left block to the left wing and has to get open for the pass. 5 steps up out of the stack to the left elbow. 1 passes to 3 on the left wing. 2 and 4 hold the stack on the right block.
Frame 2. 3 has the ball on the left wing, 5 is at the left elbow, 1 in the left slot, and 2 and 4 are still stacked on the right block. 5 turns and back-screens for 1, the UCLA screen. 1 cuts off it, past the outside of 5 and down to the rim, and 3 can hit him for a layup. If 1 is not open, he stays low on the left block.
Frame 3. 1 stayed low on the left block. 3 has the ball on the left wing, 5 is at the left elbow sealing his defender with his outside arm up as a target, and 2 is on the right block with 4 just above him. 3 passes to 5's outside hand, and 5 turns to face his defender. As the ball leaves 3's hands, 2 cuts out from the right block to the right wing, and 4 sprints across the lane to set a shuffle screen for 3 a step above the left block. 5 passes to 2 on the right wing.
Frame 4. 2 has the ball on the right wing, 5 is at the left elbow, 1 on the left block, 4 set for the shuffle screen a step above the left block, and 3 on the left wing. 3 makes the shuffle cut: in off 4's screen, across the lane and down to the right block. 2 looks to pass to him on the cut.
Frame 5. 3 is on the right block after his shuffle cut. 2 has the ball on the right wing, 1 is on the left block, 4 a step above the left block and 5 at the left elbow. 4 and 5 turn to face 1 and set a staggered double down screen, 4 first and 5 second. 1 comes up off both screens, around the outside of them, and curls to the middle of the free-throw line, where 2 passes to him for the shot.
Frame 6. The counter at the reversal. 5 has the ball at the left elbow after the feed from 3, who is still on the left wing. 4 is set for the shuffle screen a step above the left block, 1 is low on the left block, and 2 is on the right wing with his defender, X2, overplaying the pass from 5. 2 back-cuts behind X2 to the rim and 5 passes to him for the layup.
57 WU: An Elbow Entry Man-to-Man Set
57 WU
5 screens down for 4 and both bigs finish at the elbows. The ball goes to 4 at the elbow, 1 cuts off 5's back screen, and 2 gets a back screen or a dribble hand-back.
Frame 1. 3 is on the left block, 2 on the right block with 4 stacked just above him, and 5 at the high post. 1 dribbles up the middle to the top of the key. 3 and 2 L-cut up the lane lines and straight out to the wings, and either can swing out or work a lead instead. 5 screens down for 4, 4 comes up off the screen and across to the left elbow, and 5 spins back to the right elbow.
Frame 2. 1 has the ball at the top of the key, 3 is on the left wing, 2 on the right wing, 4 at the left elbow and 5 at the right elbow. 1 passes to 4 at the left elbow. 5 back-screens for 1, and 1 cuts off it, around the right side of 5, down to the rim.
Frame 3. 4 has the ball at the left elbow, 1 is posting up on the right block after his cut, 3 on the left wing, 5 at the right elbow and 2 on the right wing. Option one: 4 passes to 1 in the post. Option two: 5 back-screens for 2, and 2 comes off the screen and curls up behind 5 to a spot just inside the arc above the right elbow, where 4 passes to him for the jumper.
Frame 4. 4 has the ball at the left elbow, 2 is just inside the arc above the right elbow after his curl, 1 on the right block and 3 on the left wing. 5 has moved out from the right elbow to the right side, inside the arc, a move with no arrow. 4 dribbles toward 2 and hands the ball back to him, and 2 takes it heading back toward the middle above the free-throw line. 1 clears from the right block to the right corner, and 3 spaces down from the left wing to the left corner.
The Fist and Fire Baseline Out-of-Bounds Series
Fist Middle
4 back-screens for 2's curl to the rim, then 5 back-screens for 4, who cuts hard to the left side for the jumper.
Frame 1. 1 inbounds from the baseline on the left side of the lane. 5 and 4 are stacked at the left elbow, 5 a step closer to the basket on the lane line, 2 is at the right elbow and 3 in the right corner. 4 steps toward the middle and back-screens for 2, and 2 curls tight across 4's back and down the lane to the rim.
Frame 2. 2 is on the right block after his curl, 3 in the right corner, 5 on the left lane line just below the elbow, and 4 at the nail after his screen. 5 back-screens for 4. 4 plants hard and makes an aggressive scoring cut, under 5 and out to the left side of the floor inside the arc, and 1 passes to him for the jumper.
Fist Back
The counter to Fist Middle: 5 back-screens for 4 right away, and 2 back-cuts to the rim.
Frame 1. The same start: 1 inbounds from the left side of the lane, 5 and 4 are stacked at the left elbow with 5 a step closer to the basket, 2 is at the right elbow and 3 in the right corner. 5 back-screens for 4, and 4 cuts out to the left side of the floor inside the arc. 2 steps to the middle of the free-throw line, then back-cuts straight to the rim.
Fire
3 inbounds. 5 pops to the corner for the catch, 1 wheels around 4 to catch on the wing, and two back screens set up a jumper for 3 or 4.
Frame 1. 3 inbounds from the baseline on the right side of the lane. 5 is on the right block, 2 at the left elbow, 1 at the nail and 4 a step above him at the top of the free-throw circle. 5 pops out to the right corner and 3 passes to him. 2 cuts to the left corner. 1 wheels around 4 and out to the right wing, and 5 passes to him there.
Frame 2. 1 has the ball on the right wing, 5 is low on the right side after his pop, 4 on the right lane line near the elbow and 2 in the left corner. 3 has stepped in from out of bounds to the right side of the basket, a move with no arrow. 4 screens down for 3, and 3 comes up the lane to the top of the key. Then 5 back-screens for 4, and 4 runs off it along the baseline out to the right corner. 1 passes to 3 at the top of the key or to 4 in the corner for the jumper.
Zone Motion Against the 1-3-1
Special vs the 1-3-1
Two guards up top, 5 following the ball along the lane, and two forwards who move between out, in and across spots so the ball always has three outlets.
Frame 1. Two-guard front against a 1-3-1 zone or a 1-3-1 trap. 1 has the ball in the left slot and 2 is in the right slot. 3 is out on the left wing, 4 in on the right block, and 5 on the left lane line between the block and the elbow. The forwards' rules: when the far guard has the ball, the forward is in. When his own guard or his side has the ball, he is out. When the ball goes to a forward, the far forward cuts across the lane, only as far as he must to catch the ball safely. 5 follows the ball, sliding from one side of the lane to the other between the block and the elbow.
Frame 2. 1 has the ball in the left slot, 2 is in the right slot, 3 on the left wing, 4 on the right block and 5 on the left lane line. 1 passes to 3 on the left wing. 4, the far forward, cuts across the lane under the basket to the left side, just outside the block, only as far as he needs to go to catch the ball safely. 5 stays on the left lane line and 2 holds the right slot.
Frame 3. 3 has the ball on the left wing, 4 is on the left block after his cut, 5 on the left lane line, 1 in the left slot and 2 in the right slot. 3 passes back to 1. 4 must cut back across the lane to the right block, so he is in again.
Frame 4. 1 has the ball in the left slot, 2 is in the right slot, 3 on the left wing, 4 on the right block and 5 on the left lane line. 1 passes to 2. Now 4's own guard has the ball, so 4 goes out from the right block to the right wing, and 3, the weak-side forward, comes in from the left wing to the left block. 5 follows the ball, dipping across the lane to the right lane line between the block and the elbow.
Frame 5. 2 has the ball in the right slot, 4 is on the right wing, 5 on the right lane line, 3 on the left block and 1 in the left slot. 2 passes to 4. 3 cuts across the lane under the basket to the right block, only as far as he must to catch the ball safely. The ball now has three outlets again: 2 in the right slot, 5 on the lane line and 3 on the block.
Ideas That Repeat
- The stack is the starting point. Shocker, 57 WU and the Fist plays all begin with two players lined up together, so the defense cannot tell who will come out.
- A big at the elbow is the hub. In Shocker, 5 catches at the elbow and turns to face, and in 57 WU the ball goes to 4 at the elbow before the cutting starts.
- The screener is often the scorer. In Fist Middle the first screener, 4, becomes the shooter off 5's back screen, and in Fire 4 screens for 3 and then runs off 5's back screen for his own jumper.
- Options come in order. 57 WU lists a post-up, a jumper off a back screen and a dribble hand-back, and the players run the next one as soon as the defense takes the first away.
- Overplays get punished at the rim. Shocker's wing back-cuts when he is denied, and Fist Back, the counter to Fist Middle, sends 2 straight to the rim instead of curling.
- Against the 1-3-1, every forward cut goes only as far as it must to catch safely, so the ball always has three outlets.
The screens in these sets are covered in back screen basketball and down screen basketball, the shuffle cut in shuffle offense, and the hand-back in dribble hand-off. More quick hitters are in how to run quick hitters and set plays vs man-to-man. The inbounds series fits with BLOB set plays and stack inbound plays, and the zone motion with how to beat a 1-3-1 zone defense. Questions Coaches Ask About Wichita State Basketball Plays
What is the Shocker play?
A quick hitter from a low double stack. 3 cuts out for the entry, 5 back-screens for a UCLA cut by 1, the ball goes into 5 at the elbow and out to 2 on the far wing while 3 shuffle cuts, and then 4 and 5 set a staggered double down screen for 1 at the free-throw line.
Who ran the Shocker play?
Former Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall used it.
What is the difference between Fist Middle and Fist Back?
Both start with 1 inbounding, 4 and 5 stacked at the left elbow and 2 at the right elbow. In Fist Middle, 4 back-screens for 2's curl and then 5 back-screens for 4. In Fist Back, 5 back-screens for 4 right away and 2 back-cuts to the rim instead of curling.
How does this zone motion attack a 1-3-1?
Two guards play up top, 5 follows the ball along the lane, and the two forwards play by out, in and across rules. When a forward catches, the far forward cuts across the lane only as far as he must, so the ball always has three safe outlets against the trap.
